Operational area Gaza

Period: since February 2024
Mission type: Medical, MedEvac, EMT, Training

Since February 2024, we have been active in the war zone in Gaza as part of a WHO EMT (Emergency Medical Team) mission, making us the first team from Germany on the ground.

We provide support in emergency rooms of local hospitals, field hospitals and trauma stabilization points (TSP) of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) and other organizations, provide medical support for UN missions and give training in emergency care.

However, our focus is on medical evacuations, so-called MedEvacs, in which

seriously ill or injured persons are transferred to safe hospitals where they can receive appropriate treatment.

Due to the catastrophic situation of the healthcare system in Gaza, patients are increasingly having to be transported abroad. According to the UN1 , over 15,000 people are dependenton medical care outside Gaza. As part of a long rescue chain, we provide transportation and medical care within Gaza and to its borders.

The mission is extremely complicated in terms of personnel and logistics due to the restrictive access to Gaza. The ongoing fighting demands a high degree of planning and risk tolerance from our teams.

Background:

Over 65,000 Palestinians, including 18,000 children, have been killed and over 165,000 people injured since the war began.1 Hundreds of thousands have been displaced several times within Gaza and some have been separated from their families. People are trapped in the tiny territory and at the mercy of the fighting. Humanitarian aid is massively hampered and obstructed by Israel. Large areas of the Gaza Strip have been destroyed and shortages are omnipresent. Only around half of all health facilities are still partially operational. Medical staff and humanitarian aid workers are also repeatedly killed, most of them Palestinians.

According to UN data1:

  • 100% of the population exposed to an increased risk of hunger
  • 25,000 infants and over 55,000 pregnant women/breastfeeding mothers not supplied with sufficient nutrients
  • 78% percent of all buildings destroyed or damaged
  • 92% of apartments and houses damaged or destroyed
  • Around 1.4 million people are dependent on emergency accommodation
  • Only 62% of hospitals partially functional
  • Over 15,000 patients in need of immediate treatment abroad
  • 89% of the water and hygiene infrastructure destroyed
